A rare January thunderstorm followed by a cold air mass brought rain, winds, and some Friday morning sleet and snow flurries to Brown County.

The National Weather Service in San Angelo said that rain totals varied from 2.36 inches in the Lake Brownwood area up to 3.85 inches south of Brownwood for the two day weather event.  Although reports indicate that the thunderstorm caused damage in Coleman and Cross Plains, Brownwood was spared the brunt of the storm.

Lake Brownwood has already seen a benefit from the rain by rising a half foot since Thursday according to the Brown County Water Improvement District.  The lake could continue to rise to some degree for the next few days.  The current lake level is still about 7 feet low as of Friday’s reading.

The cold air settled in after the storm blew through causing Friday morning sleet to coat vehicles and temperatures to stay in the low 30’s most of Friday.  No ice was reported on roads.

The low Friday night is forecast to be about 25 degrees, but Saturday is shaping up to be clear with a high of 45.
