A 45-year-old Brownwood woman is being treated for possible rabies exposure after being bitten by a domestic cat that may have turned wild.  Lisa Duncan remains hospitalized and undergoing rabies treatment as a precaution because after the attack, the cat ran away and hasn’t been located.

According to the victim, her cat “Oreo” had been missing for over a month when he suddenly showed up at the family residence on Avenue C near 3rd street in Brownwood on Tuesday.  Duncan said the normally docile animal was acting strangely as she picked him up, and suddenly began scratching and biting her, causing scratch and puncture wounds on her arms and face.

After the wounds began showing signs of infection Wednesday evening, she went to the Brownwood Regional emergency room where she was treated for the wounds and given antibiotics.  Doctors determined that the animal may have been exposed to rabies, considering it’s sudden unusual behavior.

After a search of the neighborhood, they were unable to locate the animal to have it tested for rabies.

Duncan was hospitalized Wednesday night and began undergoing the series of rabies shots as a precaution on Thursday.  She remained hospitalized and in good condition Friday morning at the Brownwood Regional Hospital.
