Basketball: HPU Tagged With Loss By HSU

HPUlogoIn a game of runs, Hardin-Simmons University got the last one, sending them to the 75-69 win over the Howard Payne University Lady Jacket basketball team Thursday in the Brownwood Coliseum.

Starting off solid, the Lady Jackets lead by seven, 27-20 with 7:31 remaining in the first half. Following that, in the remaining seven and a half minutes, Hardin-Simmons went on a 17-3 run and took their own seven point lead entering the break up, 37-30.

The Lady Jackets came out in the first eight minutes of the second half and outscored the Cowgirls 18-4, giving the lead back to HPU, 48-41.
The Cowgirls answered back and went on a 22-12 run to regain the lead 63-60 with 3:45 remaining in the game.

In the final three minutes the lead would change twice more only for HSU to end up on top, final score, 75-69 Hardin-Simmons.

Howard Payne shot 40 percent for the game on 23-57 shooting, and were 6-17 from the three point line for 35 percent. Hardin-Simmons women shot 52 percent from the floor in the game, on 28-54 shooting.

Katy Sarem lead the Lady Jackets with 20 points, Hope Hohertz was close behind with 16. Brittany Zamora added 12 points and 4 steals.

For HSU, Lindsey Newcombe led all with 33 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Angela Newcombe had 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists.

The Lady Jackets drop to 12-4 overall and 8-4 in the American Southwest Conference. HSU goes to 8-7 overall and 5-6 in the ASC.

The next game for HPU will be at home Saturday, Jan. 23 against McMurry University at 1:00 pm.
