Lady Jackets Start Strong

girlThe #15 ranked Howard Payne Lady Jacket basketball team used a big second half surge to defeat the University of Texas at Tyler 75-48 on Friday at the Fred Jacoby I-20 Classic hosted by the University of Texas at Dallas.

Howard Payne shot 47% from the field in the second half  to outscored UT-Tyler 42-22. The second half production extended the Lady Jackets 33-26 halftime lead.

HPU got 41 of their points from the bench led by Roshonda Gayden with a team high 12 points. The Lady Jackets forced 31 UT-Tyler turnovers and posted 19 steals as a team.

Hope Hohertz had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Abby Parmelly came off the bench to score 9 also nabbing three steals.

UT-Tyler was led by Paige Parrish with a game-high 17 points. She was followed by Melissa Thomas with 10.

Saturday, the Howard Payne Lady Jacket basketball team defeated #16 University of Texas at Dallas 69-56 on day two of the Fred Jacoby I-20 Classic hosted by UT-Dallas.

Howard Payne used eight first half three-pointers to secure a 39-24 halftime lead. The Lady Jackets shot 52% from the field in the first and held UT-Dallas to just 32% shooting.

HPU’s Brittany Zamora, who finished with a game high 21 points, had 14 points at the break and was 4 of 5 from the three-point line.

Howard Payne continued with the defensive pressure in the second and extended their lead to 20, 69-49, with under two minutes to play on two free throws by Hope Hohertz.

Hohertz finished with nine points, four assists, and a game high eight rebounds. Elaine Hobbs had 11 points and Katy Sarem followed with 10 points and 4 steals.

UT-Dallas was led by Rachel Addison and Tarneisha Scott, each with 12 points.

Howard Payne improves to 2-0 on the year, while UT-Dallas falls to 2-1 overall.

Howard Payne will play next Saturday in Longview, Texas versus LeTourneau University. It will be a 1:00 pm tip-off.
