Commissioners Hear County Veteran Statistics

commissionercourtarticlepicThe Brown County Commissioners met in regular session on Monday with a full agenda.

Billy Murphey from the Brown County Veterans Service Office displayed a powerpoint presentation regarding statistics related to Veteran’s in Brown County.

According to the report there are a total of 3177 Veterans total residing in Brown County. 421 from WWII, 102 from the Korea War, 959 from Vietnam War, 818 from the Gulf Wars, and 1257 from peacetime service.

The report also indicates that 2879 Veterans utilize the VA Health Clinic with 1151 of those residing outside of Brown County.  This has an estimated $32,228 economic impact in direct sales tax recovery.

New services that the Veterans Service office will be implementing are:

  • Virtual VA that allows access of letters sent to area Veterans by the Veteran Administration Claims Department
  • VACOS will allow tracking of Veteran Appeals
  • MAP-D will allow tracking of paperwork through the VA system and look at date pertaining to pending & current actions.

The Brown County Veteran Service Office also requested a new computer for their office costing $892.80 which was approved by commissioners.

In other county business:

-Commissioners approved the list of county holidays

-The Pecan Bayou Soil & Water Conservation District has a bid submitted by Duayne Becktold approved for clean out work in the flood prevention site repair project.

-Commissioners made a proclamation declaring October as Breast Caner Awareness Month in Brown County

-Commissioners also made a proclamation declaring October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

-The Brown County Jail requested to have Harris Broadband Television cable installed at the jail.  Brownwood TV Cable has supplied cable to the jail at no cost previously.  The Jail is required to offer at least 1 hour per day of entertainment for inmates.

-Report was submitted on the balcony baluster repair.

-Commissioner approved County Judge Ray West to appoint a Local Data Advisory Board as required by state law.

-Budget amendment for 2008 were approved allocating FEMA funding

-Commissioner reappointed Tommy Petris to the Brown County Appraisal District’s board of directors.
