2009LionsBurnetThe Lions overcame some mistakes in the first half to win their first game of the season 27-24.

The Lions were the first to put some points on the board with their second possession of the game making a successful field goal kick by Dillon Ellis.

Burnet then scored in the start of the second quarter with a successful touchdown pass.  Brownwood answered those points quickly on their next drive with a touchdown, but a fumbled snap on the extra point kept the Burnet Bulldogs within striking distance.

Burnet made another touchdown on their next drive as well and completed a successful 2 point conversion giving them the lead.  Burnet tried to make another march to the end zone just before the half, but Brownwood’s defense kept pressure on the quarterback with two sacks and Burnet had to settle for a field goal.

Score at halftime had Brownwood down 9-18 with the Lions getting several penalties and fumbling a pair of snaps.

Things started to heat up in the second half of the game for Brownwood.

The second half opened with Brownwood kicking to Burnet.  Burnet fumbles the ball on 4th down and Brownwood recovers setting up a touchdown pass from Grayland Brown to Cade Johnson to close out Brownwood’s next drive.

On Burnet’s next possession, Caden Ellis of Brownwood recovers a fumble setting up another Brownwood field goal giving Brownwood back the lead.

Burnet scores a touchdown again late in the 4th quarter with about 2 minutes left on the clock, but an attempted 2 point conversion fails.

Brownwood answers quickly with two big runs by Stehl Ratliff including a 12 yard touchdown run giving Brownwood the lead once again.  Brownwood also makes a successful two point conversion.

Brownwood takes the win with a final score  of 27-24.

After the game when asked how the team corrected mistakes seen in the first half, Stehl Ratliff said, “We had a lot of mistakes in the first half, but coach pointed out our mistakes, lots of little things.  He told us how to correct our mistakes.”

Next Friday Brownwood will face LaVega in their first away game.
