DESCRIPTION:Spring is for painting—and not just home makeovers. The Brownwood Art Association is inviting artists (aged 18 and up) to grab their easels\, paints\, and brushes\, and head outside for the En Plein Air Juried Competition on Sat. April 2.\nDon’t let the French phrase put you off—En Plein Air just means “in the open air.” The event begins with registration from 7:30-9:00 am at the Art Center\, 215 Fisk Ave. in Brownwood. Registration is required. Artists may then pick any outdoor location to paint in downtown Brownwood (preferred)\, or anywhere in Brown County. If the weather is bad\, artists may work from a reference photo at the Art Center.\nOne or two Plein Air paintings must be returned to the Art Center by 4 pm. Artists may also submit\, at the same time\, one studio work\, created at any time\, of any subject (except nudes)\, for a total of 3 entries by each artist.\nThere is an entry fee of $20 per artwork\, and all works submitted must be for sale. Artists will receive 70% of the sale price\, and Brownwood Art Association will receive 30%.\nEntries will be juried for acceptance from 4-5 pm Sat. Apr. 2\, and works not accepted must be picked up from 5-6 pm. The juror for this event is Walker “Dub” Wellborn of Abilene\, Texas. All accepted works must remain for the duration of the exhibit.\nThe Exhibit Opening Reception and Awards will be Thurs. Apr. 7\, 5-8 pm\, at the Art Center. Awards will be given for Best of En Plein Air–$500; 2nd Place En Plein Air–$300; and Best of Studio–$300. Guests will experience a bit of fun and historical learning. The event will consist of a tour of the Old Jail where the exhibition will be housed\, complete with a fun speakeasy vibe! The event will continue at the Main Building where visitors can enjoy whiskey tastings while perusing other museum exhibits. Event goers must be 21 or older. Tickets must be purchased in advance either from this site or at the museum or at both the Early and Brownwood Visitor Centers. No tickets will be sold at the door. 1920s attire is encouraged though not required. Present tickets at The Old Jail.

SUMMARY:CASA to host "Childhood Trauma" Learning Session
DESCRIPTION:CASA in the Heart of Texas will sponsor a session focused on understanding the impact of trauma on children and young adults\, how trauma manifests itself in children’s behaviors\, and the ways to help them heal from their trauma. The session is free and open to all. Parents\, foster parents\, caregivers\, teachers\, guidance counselors\, and those working in child social service organizations should find this session useful. There will be a question-and-answer period for general questions at the end of the session.  This session does not have CEUs associated with it\, but there will be a certificate of attendance emailed to those who request it.  \nThe speaker for the event will be Carlton Burke who is the Clinical Director for the Audrey Grace house in Abilene which provides counseling and residential services for children in foster care.  Mr. Burke has over 20 years of experience as a therapist and counselor and has spent 15 years working specifically with trauma. \n The session will be from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM on May 24 and will take place at the Community Connections of Central Texas building located at 901 Avenue B in Brownwood. Contact our offices at (325) 643-2557 or visit our Volunteer page @ https://casabrownwood.org/volunteer/ to fill out paperwork.  \nVolunteer Advocates are everyday people – teachers\, business people\, retirees\, stay-at-home moms\, and grandparents – who are committed to making a difference for children who might otherwise slip through the cracks in an overburdened foster care system. They are appointed by judges to one child or one set of siblings\, focusing solely on that one child or sibling group and their family throughout the duration of the case. CASA volunteer Advocates research case records and speak to each person involved in a child’s life\, including family members\, teachers\, doctors\, lawyers\, and social workers.  CASA volunteer Advocates identify supportive people in the child’s life that CASA can work with to promote safety and well-being for the child during their time in care. They monitor the progress of the child and family throughout the case and advocate for the child’s current and future needs in court\, in school\, and in agency meetings. Their independent evaluations allow the Court to make better informed decisions.
