Dallas Huston, “Voice of the Brownwood Lions” for 58 years and “Voice of the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets” for 57 years, pictured in the AT&T Stadium press box.

I went off the deep end last week and took Arkansas to win the National Championship. I told you I would wait until today, which is Sunday, to go through my entire bracket. I’ve done it. The fact is I got about half way through it and said, “Arkansas is going to win it so who cares?”

Arkansas finished fourth I think in one of the regions, which I thought they would probably get third. Fourth is all right because the bracket that Arkansas is in probably favors number four as much as it does number three. Four or three, whatever they are in, I think they probably play Hawaii in the first round which will be either Thursday or Friday. Hawaii! Now you know as much as I do.

What I wanted to talk with you about this week is what I’m seeing on TV. I thought I kept up with basketball! Surely this hasn’t been going on for decades and I hope I’m not that out of it, but since when did they start allowing ten, eleven, twelve assistant coaches. I’m telling you, it’s there. I’m not sure I can count that high. Ten at least and eleven or twelve a possibility. I don’t understand it.

I remember people like Glen Whitis. Sure, it was the old Lone Star Conference but it was still basketball. He had one assistant, Russell Berry. I think every team that we played had the same number. I think every team we played, St. Mary’s, Sam Houston, it didn’t matter. You were allowed one assistant coach. I can remember most of them by name. Derryberry I don’t think ever had more than one assistant.

But, here they sit. I don’t understand it. I don’t know what seven, eight and nine do for a living. It’s unbelievable. That means you have almost as many assistants as you do players. I just have no earthly idea. I don’t even know what the rule is. They have nine, ten, or eleven assistant coaches. That, well I hate to say it, but that seems a little bit heavy to me. If you want to do assistant coaches like the head coaches, I just don’t understand it. I don’t even know how to word it. I don’t understand it at all. I guess it’s for me to figure out. Unbelievable! Somebody will grab me and explain it to me, but that’s way, way, way too many.

Until next time, so long everybody.
