During Tuesday morning’s meeting, the Brownwood City Council ratified a Brownwood Municipal Development District action to allocate $50,000 to the Central Texas Veterans Memorial in their efforts to raise $175,00 to construct a new covered pavilion at the memorial.

Dennis Rumfield, on behalf of the Central Texas Veterans Memorial, brought a model of the planned pavilion and addressed the Council with the following details regarding the project.

“The fundraising part has been very positive, and there are two words to describe this – exciting and impressive,” Rumfield said. “This is a Darrin St Ama design. The concrete is 75 foot across. It’s going to consist of 10 columns and they’ll sit outside the memorials and encompass most of the memorials. The columns will be 14 feet high and that’s the biggest part of the project, and phase one. Phase two is to get all the red iron up in the air and on to each end, which is gabled, and sits up about 23 feet high. The reason we did that is so we could have a visual to the flag pole. Phase three is to prepare the iron from priming and painting, and phase four is to put the sheeting on. The contractor said it is going to be galvalume, which is a little sturdier and should refract some of the heat away. And then phase five is the stage lighting for it.”

The Central Texas Veterans Memorial is also soliciting local businesses for donations along with applying for an LCRA grant.

Also Tuesday, Council approved the addition of a flowerbed, bench, plants, memorial plaque honoring Gold Star Families in Brown County at Memorial Park.

The Garden Club contacted the Parks & Recreation Department inquiring how to move forward with a plan to honor Gold Star Families in Memorial Park. Parks & Recreation will assist with selecting the location and providing adequate water supply to the flowerbed, while the Garden Club will maintain the flowerbed by cleaning twice per year and adding fresh plants when needed.
