I want to get a little bit personal today, well, not to terribly personal , but more personal than usual. I’ve had to resign as Pastor of Center City Baptist Church because of a decline in my health. It was an unexpected thrill and a joy beyond words to serve as their Pastor.
I actually started preaching in the late ‘90s. Goodness gracious, I preached revivals and just more places than I can name, but I always told people “I will never be a pastor.” “I’m not called to be a pastor.” “I don’t want to be a pastor”. I told a bunch of churches that. I mean a bunch of them. Then low and behold, I became a pastor! This church was different. I didn’t think I would ever do it, and so I want to take just a minute and talk about being a pastor.
What a blessing it was for 17 years and 5 months! I finally ran out of fuel or however you want to put it, but it was just one of the great blessings of my life. I could sit here and lift several people up, but I would leave a bunch of people out. It was truly, truly, one of the great blessings of my life. I wish I was in better shape and maybe I could make it a bit longer, but I’m not. I’m kind of trapped in this worn out body of mine. I don’t know how else to put it. I’ll tell you one of the great blessing that I’ve had was being Pastor at Center City.
I thought my great blessing was being the Voice of the Brownwood Lions and Howard Payne University – it wasn’t. I thought one of the great blessing was winning a National Championship at Howard Payne and it was such a blessing, but it wasn’t the GREAT blessing. I thought – I could just go on and on. I used to think blessings came down to baseball games, or basketball games, or football games. I just cared about those and I thought they were great blessing and they were. They don’t last long, but that church will.
I’ll tell you what I learned. I’ve learned that the difference you make with people lasts forever. That’s the great memory that Center City Baptist Church means to me. They will last forever!
Until next time, so long everybody.
