For my column this week I decided to go back in history just a bit. I just sat around one day and thought “What’s the greatest upset I’ve ever seen – basketball, baseball, football?” I thought about a lot of stuff but I still have one that is my favorite.
I was with a friend of mine and had done a Howard Payne game that afternoon. I think it was in November and it was drizzly and everything.
I know I made my pick on the radio and I thought it was a pretty good pick because everybody went along with me.
Texas had about a 7-1 record. Baylor was out of it again. This was back when Baylor never won a ballgame. I think it was 1974 and Baylor was playing Texas in Waco. There wasn’t anything wrong with my pick at the moment, but then in the second part of the ballgame it started falling apart for Texas. By golly, it fell completely apart. I think the final score was 34-24 or something like that. It was 24-7 Texas at halftime.
Then, I think Texas started the second half and got a punt blocked and nothing else went for Texas that day. I forget what it was but it was the upset of the day when it was finally said and done. Wait a minute, it was more than that it was the upset of the year. And wait again, it became the upset of the century and then the upset of all time. It was unbelievable!
Baylor had become a big problem. A big problem! Baylor had beaten Texas! I actually had some friends who were on that staff back then. That staff included my friend Bill Hicks and he was at Baylor in 1974. Jay Allison played on that team so I had a connection there.
Unbelievable! That’s what people kept saying – unbelievable! But Baylor won the ballgame 34-24. It was a good ballgame but it was a huge, huge upset. That’s about the way it ended with Texas winning 34-24. Baylor had beaten the University of Texas and it seemed like nothing would ever be the same again – and it hasn’t been.
Until next time, so long everybody.
