A Brownwood man was in Brown County Jail Monday morning on bonds totaling $132,500 after an arrest on numerous  charges Saturday night, including Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant.

According to a report from the Brownwood Police Department:

On Saturday, March 11, 2023, at approximately 9:30 pm, officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1700 block of 2nd St regarding a report of Criminal Mischief.

Officers arrived on scene and learned that Paul Jacob Spensser, 39, of Brownwood just left the residence in an agitated state.  Prior to leaving, he kicked a can of paint thinner inside the living room, causing the chemical to pour throughout the room.  As they argued, Spensser confirmed to them that he was going to burn the home down.

While officers were on scene, Officer Justin Taylor was still approaching and observed a pickup matching the description of the suspect vehicle only a block away at a stop sign.

Officer Taylor contacted the driver and confirmed his identity.  Both exited their vehicles to speak on the matter.  Spensser was very agitated and increasingly confrontational with officers.  He believed he was owed money by the homeowner and expected compensation.  When he learned of a warrant for his arrest for theft out of Lampasas County, Spensser only increased his agitation and began demanding that officers shoot him.

Spensser’s aggression only increased and as officers moved in to arrest him he pulled out a pocket knife from his right front pocket, prompting two officers to deploy their Tasers.  At the moment of impact, Spensser threw his knife at an officer, before being immobilized by the device.  He was then secured in handcuffs.

Ultimately, Spensser was arrested for the warrant out of Lampasas for theft, attempted Arson, Resisting Arrest/Detention and Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant.

(Those charged are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.)
