Lions claw back from 11 down in fourth quarter, but Glen Rose prevails, 69-61

Carson Noe (23) was one of four players in double figures with 14 points for Brownwood, which finished its first season under head coach Jorden Young with a 12-19 overall record and 2-8 district mark

GLEN ROSE – The Brownwood Lions scored the first 11 points of the fourth period to pull even with District 6-4A rival Glen Rose, but the playoff-bound Tigers responded with a 15-5 run en route to a 69-61 victory in the final game of the first season of the Jorden Young coaching era for the maroon and white.

“I thought we did a great job of competing and never showed any quit all the way to the end,” Young said. “That was one of the big things I talked about before the game, regardless of whether you’re playing for something or not, you still have to go compete because you’re a competitor. From tip off all the way until the end of the game we had that effort and willingness to compete and do good things, and I was really proud of that.”

The Lions led 15-12 after one quarter, but fell behind 36-26 at halftime and were down 50-39 heading to the fourth period. There, Brownwood struck for the first 11 points – four from Carson Noe, a bucket from Durham Brown, and the last five points by Elias Perez – to even the score at 50 with 4:55 to go.

Still knotted at 52, Glen Rose drilled a three-pointer and added a traditional three-point play to secure a 58-52 lead with 3:57 left, and Brownwood never threatened again.

“We just don’t have a lot of experience in those situations,” Young said. “We made that 11-0 run and we were getting to the hole and making lay ups, and they go on a 15-5 run and we’re shooting contested threes and settling for jump shots and not playing the style of ball we need to play. Again, that’s experience. We fought back and now what does it look like to close out a game. We don’t have that experience, but we’ve showed a lot of growth, even in the game tonight.”

Four Lions finished in double figures led by Cannon Calvert with 16 points, Brown with 15, Noe with 14, and Perez with 12. Judson Coalson and Grant Gray contributed two points each for Brownwood.

Glen Rose (24-10, 8-2) received 16 points from Noah Voss, 14 from Ryder Ribitzki, 13 from Gabe Cuellar, and 11 points from Dawson Miller.

Brownwood finished the season with a 12-19 overall record and 2-8 mark against District 6-4A competition.
