Well, the Brownwood Lions certainly had their season come to a close the other night. I hope and pray that the team that they got walloped by goes ahead and wins State or comes close to it. They were impressive.
But the impressive thing I want to talk about today is a high school team, certainly not the only one, but one that has come out of the grave under Andy Howard for three years. They are the Goldthwaite Eagles. They lost Friday night by 10 points to a team that was favored by more. They are a real good team this year and if they add to this year next year, they could be something very special. They’ve won, I think, three or four State Championships in history so far, and who’s to think they might not win a few more. They performed very well late and won most of their games.
They need to be congratulated! But I think it was when they were 8 or 9 games in and battling for a playoff spot that things changed. Mart was ranked number one in the state and lost to Goldthwaite something like 46-0. Most people thought it was over before it started but it was not. Goldthwaite won the game and it was not even close!
But what about the future? Andy has most of his team back next year except for the lineman. He has a couple of undefeated teams coming up that are ready to make their mark and they will make a difference.
Andy Howard and the Goldthwaite Eagles will be something talked about for years. They WERE a great football power and NOW they are again.
Until next time, so long everybody.
