BI-DISTRICT PLAYOFF ROUNDUP: Comanche, Coleman moving on to second round

BRECKENRIDGE – For the second season in a row, the Coleman Bluecats claimed a Region II-2A Division I bi-district championship over Alvord, picking up a 47-7 victory Thursday night.

Coleman (9-2) gave up just 77 yards of total offense to Alvord (6-3), with 54 coming through the air and 23 on the ground, while forcing a pair of turnovers. Offensively, the Bluecats churned out 391 yards – 238 passing and 153 rushing.

Quarterback Brayden Torres completed 18 of 22 passes for 238 yards with five touchdowns, including three to Hunter Lackey who finished with seven receptions for 109 yards. Jadin Jackson caught four passes for 45 yards with a touchdown and rushed for 52 yards. Paul Salas added a team-high 63 rushing yards and a score, and Brent Bouldin hauled in a 14-yard scoring reception to go along with 23 rushing yards.

Next up, the Bluecats will face Marlin (9-2) – a 36-7 winner over Kerens Thursday night – at 7 p.m. Thursday at Tarleton Memorial Stadium in Stephenville in the area round of the playoffs.

Comanche 26, Henrietta 21

SPRINGTOWN – The District 5-3A Division II third seed Comanche Indians ended the District 6-3A Division II runner-up Henrietta Bearcats’ season for the second year in a row, collecting a 26-21 bi-district victory here Friday night.

Comanche (7-4) gave up a 75-yard touchdown just 18 seconds into the contest, but answered with touchdowns on runs of 38 yards by Sawyer Wilkerson, 1 yard by Kazdon Thedford and 1 yard by quarterback Layden Welch.

Leading 20-7, Comanche witnessed Henrietta storm back to grab a 21-20 lead late in the third period.

But with 5:34 left in the contest, Welch connected with Baylor commit Kyler Beaty on an 89-yard touchdown pass that sealed the victory for the Indians.

Comanche manufactured 379 yards – 225 rushing and 154 passing – while allowing 374 yards – 257 on the ground and 117 through the air.

Wilkerson rushed for 118 yards followed by Welch with 100. Welch also completed 6 of 8 passes for 154 yards as Beaty led the way with four grabs for 120 yards and Cayden Davis hauled in a 34-yard reception.

Next, Comanche will face undefeated District 7 champion Scurry-Rosser (11-9), which is coming off a 28-19 Thursday win over Blue Ridge, at 7 p.m. Friday in Burleson in the area round of the playoffs.

Cherokee 63, Zephyr 20

SAN SABA – The District 15-A Division II champion Zephyr Bulldogs’ season ended in the bi-district round of the playoffs for the second year in a row at the hands of a Top 10 foe in the Cherokee Indians.

Zephyr (8-3) finished with 394 yards of total offense – 241 passing and 153 rushing – while No. 6 Cherokee (9-1) amassed 504 yards – 298 through the air and 206 on the ground. Both teams turned the ball over once.

Wyatt Stevens completed 14 of 27 passes for Zephyr with two touchdowns, both to Tripp Ballard, who caught six passes for 68 yards. Ballard also rushed for a team-best 81 yards and the Bulldogs’ third touchdown.

Karsen Floyd added 70 yards on the ground and caught five passes for 52 yards for the Bulldogs.

Other contributors for the Zephyr offense were Trapper Schoenhals with two catches for 62 yards; Chayden Woodcock with two receptions for 42 yards; Jim Evetts with 16 yards rushing and 16 yards receiving on one catch; and Rhett Williams hauled in a 1-yard reception.

Cherokee was led by Gunner Baugh, who rushed for 141 yards and three touchdowns to go along with five catches for 82 yards and another score.

Joel Valdez completed 13 of 21 passes for 298 yards with three scoring strikes, while rushing for 69 yards and two touchdowns.

Brady Johnson led Cherokee with five catches for 140 yards and a 65-yard touchdown, and Jeremiah Wakefield hauled in a 45-yard touchdown reception.

Wink 43, Cross Plains 0

SAN ANGELO – For the second season in a row, the District 6-2A Division II fourth seed Cross Plains Buffaloes witnessed their campaign conclude in the bi-district round of the playoffs to the District 5 champion Wink Wildcats.

Cross Plains (4-7) was limited to 159 yards of total offense, with 155 coming on the ground, while Wink (10-1) reeled off 316 yards, led by a 279-yard ground attack.

Tyler Mackey led the Buffaloes with 87 yards rushing while Dusty Wyatt added 61 yards and completed 1 of 9 passes for 4 yards – to Alex Parker – with one interception. Coltyn Barron and Kevin Hopkins added 4 and 3 yards on the ground, respectively.

Bronte 36, Rising Star 20

WINTERS – The District 14-A Division II champion Rising Wildcats were upset by the Bronte Longhorns, 36-20, in Region IV-IA Division II bi-district playoff action Friday night.

The Wildcats finished the season with an 8-3 overall record and a second consecutive district championship.
