HPUlogoThe Howard Payne University baseball team got one win in a three game conference series against Concordia University Texas Friday and Saturday afternoon.

In the first game on Friday, the Jackets never got going on either end, losing 26-6. Trailing 8-4 after three innings, HPU got outscored 18-2 in the remaining six.

In the first game of the double header Saturday, HPU trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the forth inning. The Yellow Jackets answered back with one in the forth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth to hold off Concordia 5-4 for the win.
Taylor Zambreski’s two RBI single in the bottom of the sixth was what the Jackets needed for the come-from-behind win.

Since the Jackets took the lead late in the game, closer Robert Anders picked up the win on 1.2 innings of work only allowing one hit in the six batters that he faced. Concordia’s Jason Rangel records the loss for the Tornadoes.

In the final game of the series, the Jackets again found themselves down 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth. The comeback started when Will Garlick was walked with the bases loaded scoring Nick Loving.

Next, Taylor Zambreski cleared the bases when he hit a grand slam to right center scoring Garlick, Kyle Lloyd and Dustin Climer. That would tie the game at five. They would tack on another run to take the lead 5-6, when Ryan Breeding came around to score.

Concordia would answer back with four more runs of their own in the sixth taking back the lead 9-6. HPU would score only two more in the sixth and lose, 13-8.

The Jackets finish the weekend with a 9-8 record overall and 1-2 in the ASC. Concordia goes to 8-10 and 2-1 in the ASC.

The next game for the Yellow Jackets will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 16 at Don Shepard Park against Concordia University Nebraska.
