Local Performers Travel to Exclusive Talent Workshop in New York

Wednesday, 08 September 2010 09:42 | Written by Lisa Tipton | PDF | Print | E-mail
Op/Ed

DancersNYWide eyed with big hopes and dreams…that’s how I would describe the three students from Amy’s Dance Academy that traveled to New York for an intense training workshop for dance, voice and acting.  Beautiful girls that have always felt they had something more burning in their hearts, waiting to be discovered, got the chance to learn from some of the biggest names in show business.  They learned not only how to be better at their particular art, but also how to improve their health, mental well being and self esteem.

Sandoval Family Thanks Community & Local Businesses for Support

Op/Ed

Two thank you notes were submitted by the Sandoval family to thank those who have meant so much to their family for the work that they have done to help raise funds by either donating to or working hard on the fundraising events.  The letters are as follows:

Donation for Taylor Sandoval’s fundraiser

To All:  The Businesses that donated and helped with Taylor Sandoval’s Fundraiser

We would like to Thank you and your company for the generous gift to the fundraiser for Taylor.  The fundraiser was a huge success, and the fundraiser would not have been possible without your help.  You are truly making a difference in people’s lives and especially in Taylor’s.  We are so blessed to be a part of such a wonderful community.  Thank you on behalf of Taylor and thank you from our family.

Mullin Fills the Boot for Bubba

Tuesday, 17 August 2010 19:23 | Written by Lisa Tipton | PDF | Print | E-mail
Op/Ed

kemberMullinRodeo10Friday and Saturday, people at the Mullin Rodeo showed just how big their hearts are by “filling the boot” with donations for DerekScott Kirby or “Bubba” as friends and family call him.

Although the crowd was small, Kember Croft and her friends (pictured to left with her horse Chakoti) raised $120 to help with expenses the family is incurring during Bubba’s hospitalization.  Pictured below are Croft and friends in their Bubba’s Angels t-shirts at the rodeo.

Just like the story in the Bible about the Widow’s Mite (Luke 21:1-4), even small amounts given can and do mean a lot.  People all over the state, even those who have never met Bubba,  are hosting events such as t-shirt sales, car washes, Chili’s Fundraising nights, and more to help.

Memories of a Harvey Girl - Video

Sunday, 08 August 2010 18:25 | Written by Ray Tipton | PDF | Print | E-mail
Op/Ed

CasonRoomThe Depot Centennial Celebration on Friday went like most people would expect.  Cake, punch, speeches were all included, but there was something extraordinary about this event.  Something was extra special about what happened on Friday and her name was Dorothy Cason.

Mrs. Cason is a former “Harvey Girl” at the famous Harvey House that joins our Depot Civic & Cultural Center.   Most people know the Harvey House now as the place that houses the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce office, but in years past, it was a restaurant that served the many passengers riding on the Santa Fe railway.

Mrs. Cason began her career as a “Harvey Girl” in 1940 at the age of 16 and worked there until the end of the war when the Brownwood Harvey House closed.   She worked as a waitress and cashier at the restaurant and lived in one of the rooms in the upstairs portion of the building with the other employees.

Mrs. Cason came to the celebration on August 6th and was greeted very much like a celebrity with cameras flashing and video rolling.  I am sure she was somewhat overwhelmed, but the 86-year-old resident of Baird took it all in stride with a smile on her face.

LighttheLyricBrownwood Area Citizens and Businesses:

The Board of Directors of the Lyric Performing Arts Company would like to express its sincere appreciation to the citizens, businesses and organizations of the Brownwood area that supported our summer productions, camp activities and the street party, including the most recent presentations of Harvey and Annie.  The shows were extremely well-attended and the excitement expressed by the audiences both during the shows and as they were leaving was very heartwarming.  At least a third of the audiences were from many areas of the state outside the eight county Brownwood Trade Area and beyond, in addition to those from the Brownwood area.  The attendance at Annie represented a significant new record for LPAC performances.

Mighty Maroon Gets Underway with Summer Rehearsals

BandPractice1

Brownwood High School campus is buzzing with activities, not only are the Lions back on the field with Two-a-Days football practice, but the Mighty Maroon Marching Band is also hard at work, practicing three times a day for the next two weeks.

Starting at 8am, band members begin rehearsing marching drills and then have a couple of hours of the full band playing their music for the season.  Then each section of the band has their own in depth practice in the afternoon.  The full band has a second practice again from 6-8pm each evening, with the exception of Wednesdays and weekends.

After the two weeks of intense practice, the band will have made enough progress to lighten the rehearsal times to 4-6pm each day for the last week before school starts.

Post Office Applying for a Rate Increase for 2011

Tuesday, 06 July 2010 19:23 | Written by Lisa Tipton | PDF | Print | E-mail
Op/Ed

USPSInflation is hitting us everywhere.  The cost of gas, food, and now it seems even postage stamps are possibly going to increase in price.

Recently the U.S. Postal Service requested a 2¢ increase in first class stamps to 46¢, a 2¢ increase in post card stamps to 30¢, and an 8% increase in postage for periodicals.  Other postal services such as advertising and parcel postage rates will also be increasing.

The rate increase is one of annual increases since 2006 which was the first increase in three years at that time.  The change, if approved, will go into effect on Jan. 2.
